Bio

Mary Ann (Armstrong) Gamblin was born in Oneonta, AL. As a girl she chopped cotton with her three siblings, Walter, Talmadge and Wynell. Her mother Hettie moved the family to Birmingham in 1947, where Mary Ann lived most of her adult life. In 1956 Mary Ann graduated from Woodlawn H.S. After attending Massey Business College, she pursued a successful career as a legal secretary, mostly in US Bankruptcy Court. In 1986 she was Alabama Legal Secretary of the Year; she was also a surprisingly good bowler. Mary Ann passed away in St. Petersburg, FL on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015. She leaves behind a sister, Martha Wynell Hughes, daughter Dr. Julie Buckner Armstrong, son-in-law Dr. Thomas Hallock, and grandson Zackary Armstrong-Hallock. We remember her stubborn independence, her passion for justice, her love for family, a green thumb and her laugh. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Dec. 20, 2-4 pm, at Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve, 1214 81st St. S, in B'ham. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Mary Ann Gamblin Scholarship, BLSA Educational Fund, c/o Deborah P. Holmes, Duke Law Firm, 1572 Montgomery Hwy, Ste 205, Birmingham, AL 35216-4520. [Published in The Birmingham News from Dec. 10 to Dec. 16, 2015]
