Clarence Varilek was born September 22, 1920 at Geddes, South Dakota, the son of James and Mary (Turnovec) Varilek. He was raised on the farm near Geddes and graduated from Geddes High School in the Class of 1940. From the time he was very young he was always called "Ed". He was married to Mildred Simunek on May 4, 1942 and they farmed and ranched in the Geddes area and around Gregory, SD. The family moved to Stuart, Nebraska in 1965 and purchased the Fox Farm where they had a business of raising chickens and selling eggs from Valentine to O'Neill. Ed then went on road construction, which he loved, and was known as the "Colonel" by many contractors because of his expertise and knowledge. He was very proud of the tractor he had built and used to on the farm. He loved his A and B John Deere tractor collection. Ed and Mildred were blessed with eight children for whom he showed his love for his family through hard work to support them and ensure their education. Ed's main enjoyment in his later years was researching the family genealogy and working on his John Deere tractors. He could tell stories for hours of his road construction work. He was an avid pitch player. For the past year Ed has lived in the loving care of Parkside Manor in Stuart and will be deeply missed. He passed away on August 24, 2010 at the age of 89 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Elvern Varilek. Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home Gregory, SD
