Bio

The Bonham Daily Favorite Bonham, Texas Friday, 29 May 1959, Page 3 Mrs. Martha Long Dies; Rites at 2:30 Saturday in Trenton Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Long, one of Bonham's oldest residents, died in a Trenton Rest home at 1:30 a.m. Friday, May 29, 1959. She had been in declining health since her 95th birthday last August. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Methodist church in Trenton with the Rev. H. V Caraway, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Burns cemetery, near Trenton, with Cooper Funeral Home directing. Born in Tennessee, Aug. 13, 1863, Mrs. Long was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Al Short. Her father was a soldier in the Civil War and Mrs. Long could relate many interesting stories of the war. She was married to James Long in Kentucky in 1882, and they made their home on a farm in Kentucky several years. They came to Texas in 1884, settling in Texarkana and later coming to Trenton where they made their home on a farm until his death in 1934. Mrs. Long made her home in a small cottage near her nieces, Mrs. Claude Crawford and Mrs. Lee Ford, Highway 82 West, until her health failed and she went to live in the rest home last fall. Mrs. Long was a loyal Democrat and was a member of the Methodist church. She reared two foster daughters, Mrs. Claude Crawford of Bonham and Mrs. Nettie Ford of Bakersville, Calif. She is survived by several other nieces, two of them, Mrs. Lee Ford and Mrs. Nannie Ford, also live in Bonham.
