Sweetwater Gasoline Fire Claims Second Fatality Sweetwater, June 21 - This West Texas city counted its second fatality Sunday after thousands of gallons of gasoline exploded in an oil firm warehouse area. Mrs. Bertha E. McCauley, 58, died at 8:45 a.m. Sunday in a Sweetwater hospital of burns suffered in the blast which spat flames within five blocks of Sweetwater's business district. Her daughter, Miss Vergie Lee Westmoreland, 30, died Saturday night. Both were in a house near the scene of the explosion and fire. A big 20,000-gallon tank burst at the Roberts Oil Company-Sheridan Distributing Company warehouse area. The firm distributes Sinclair Oil products. W. H. Sheridan, firm manager, estimated loss in the warehouse area alone at more than $75,000. Five other big tanks of gasoline and one kerosene tank exploded at intervals after the first blast. The fire was brought under control at 10 p.m. Saturday, but another, smaller blaze broke out at 12:30 a.m. Sunday. It was brought under control quickly. Mrs. McCauley and her daughter suffered fatal injuries when the escaping gasoline engulfed their home and burst into flames. These flames also destroyed another home but occupants of the house were away at the time. Mrs. McCauley had lived here since 1939. She was a native of Tyler. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Robert Parrish of Sweetwater and Mrs. Russell Hubbard of Wichita Falls; a son, Eldon Westmoreland; a brother, W. O. Marshall of Colorado; two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Ivy of Conroe and Mrs. Nadine Foster of Lufkin; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Double funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Fundamental Baptist Church of Sweetwater with the Rev. A. L. Patterson officiating. Burial will be in Sweetwater Cemetery.
