Bio

The second child of James Spender Sumsion and Belva Whiting, Max graduated from Springville High School in 1934, and started working at Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Company. Known affectionately as "Tuffy," on February 17, 1939, he married his high school sweetheart, Betty Louise Boyer, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They shared 67 years together. Max grew up on a farm, learning to work hard at an early age. By age 13, he was driving a three-horse team plowing sugar beets. Max spent 41 years working at the pipe plant, and traded in his crane for a tractor, returning to farm work which he loved, when he inherited his parent's farm. Max was always athletic and had played boxing and basketball in Junior High School, while in High School, he lettered for three years in Varsity Basketball and four years was the Quarterback of the Football team. In his senior year, he was elected to the All State football team. He was a key organizer and charter member of the Hobble Creek Riding Club, serving as its President and Drill Captain for several years. He has also been President of the Young Men, a Scoutmaster, and a leader in High Priest Group. An accomplished horseman, Max loved to ride. His gardens, fields and yard reflected his love of growing things, and he was happiest when he was doing something with his hands. He was a self-taught gardener and wood-worker. He loved to create helpful gadgets for use around the house, yard or farm. A devoted member of the LDS Church, he was always helpful to others, and would often join in helping another farmer move cattle, haul hay, plowing snow, or being a Mr. Fixit. A big tease, he loved a good joke and playing games. He and Betty have a son, Kent, and six grandchildren.
