Bio

Early Life: Grant was born on a cold Christmas Day of 1929 in Lehi, Utah. He was the youngest child born to Joseph Earl Smith and Laura Bringhurst Smith. He grew up in Lehi and spent his entire life in the same home that he was born in. Grant worked alongside his father and his brother on the farm in Cedar Valley, where he learned the value of hard work. In his youth, he acquired a love of horses and mountains, enjoying many interesting adventures with his friends at the top of West Canyon. During one adventure in Mercur, they discovered discarded dynamite caps which resulted in an explosion. Grant was severely injured and eventually lost his sight in one eye. Despite his injuries, he spent his life accomplishing whatever he set his mind to. Life's Work/Service/Interests: On June 8, 1949, he married Rose Marie Ferrell, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. As they began their life together, he continued pursuing a lifetime of farming. He became known as an innovative and progressive farmer and businessman. His operation eventually included raising turkeys, rabbits, cattle and specialty crops. In addition to his farming, he also developed many other successful businesses. In his “spare time” he pursued many interests. He had a great love of flying which lead him to purchase an airport and airplanes. He loved spending time at Lake Powell with family and friends in the summer and snowmobiling up to his cabin in the winter. After retirement, he and Rose Marie loved spending the winter months at his home in St. George and he loved golfing there. He would then return home to oversee his newest adventure, Wasatch Wing and Clay in Cedar Valley. Grant had a great love of his community which was expressed through a lifetime of service. He was president of the JCs and was named “Outstanding Man of the Year” in 1958. He was on the Lehi City Council and was a deputy sheriff. Grant served on The Alpine Soil Conservation District board and enjoyed many associations while traveling to conventions. Perhaps his most passionate service was with Lehi Fire Department where he served for 40 years, including an unprecedented three terms as Chief. He was considered one of the top fire investigators in the state. He was a faithful member of the LDS Church serving in many capacities, his favorite being home teaching.
