William Daniel Bateman, Sr. was the 1st son and 1st child of John Bateman and Rachael Churchill Bateman. He had several occupations during his lifetime. He had a shoe shop, ran a gin, was a carpenter, blacksmith and farmer. He was also an overseer of slaves (possibly while in Georgia). Considered "well-to-do", could read and was considered well educated. On the other hand, his wife, Winnie Rogers Routon Bateman, daughter of Matthew T. Routon and Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" Alford Routon, could neither read nor write. They were married on May 4, 1851 in Meriweather Co., GA. They had 7 sons and 4 daughters. William Daniel Bateman, Sr. was a brother to my paternal great-great-grandfather. Jean (Bateman) Wallace Bateman Family History
