A time of celebration and memorial book signing for Roberta J. “Bert” Owens was held on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 with the family greeting friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma, Nebraska. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Roberta June “Bert” Owens, 67 years of age, of Alma, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at her home in Alma following a courageous battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Roberta was born October 21, 1947 in Wichita, Kansas, to Edward and Edith (Smith) Tierney. She received her education from Alma Public Schools, graduating from Alma High School with the class of 1966. Bert then pursued a career in cosmetology, as she attended the Queen Ann Beauty School of Cosmetology in Kearney, Nebraska. On May 2, 1972 she was united in marriage to John Rhoades and to this union three children were born: Jessica, Dustin, and Traci. The family made their home in Alma, where they raised their children. Throughout the years, Bert enjoyed a long career in cosmetology, as a beauty instructor at the Queen Ann Beauty School. In addition, she also created many friendships as she owned and operated Bert’s Cut and Curl Beauty Salon, first in Kearney then moving her business to Albion, NE. On February 16, 1991, Bert was united in marriage to Richard D. Owens in Kearney. In 1994, Bert and Dick moved to Albion, where she continued her career. She also enjoyed quilting, crocheting, tending to her flower gardens, baking and most of all the time she spent with her grandchildren was treasured and held close to her heart. On November 27, 2006 her husband, Dick, preceded her in death. In 2007, Bert returned to Alma to be closer to her family. Besides her husband, Dick and her parents; Bert was preceded in death by three grandchildren: Ciera, Keelie and Tye Payne; step-grandchild, Sydnee Owens; and father-in-law and mother-in-law. Bert leaves to celebrate her life; her three children: Jessica Howsden and husband, James; Dustin Rhoades; and Traci Rhoades and her special friend, Allen Muirhead all of Alma; and her #1 grandson, Tyrell Howsden of Alma; a special friend of the family who was like a daughter, Cindy Davis and her family of Alma; and special friends: Jeff and Shannon Lynch and family of Alma, four step-children: Candace Kirwan and her husband, Will of Comstock, Nebraska; Dustin Owens and his wife, Shonda of Allen, Texas; Nicholas Owens of Aurora, Nebraska; and Waylon Owens and his wife, Ariane of Las Vegas; and many step-grandchildren; Bert’s siblings: Bill Neff and his wife, Jan of Barronett, Wiconsin, David Roach and his wife, Helen of Ellinwood, Kansas, Glendon Roach and his wife, Donna, Theresa Browne and her husband, Bill all of Great Bend, Kansas, Brad Roach and his wife, Michelle of Bayfield, Colorado, and Lisa Anderson of Great Bend, Kansas; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Mike Owens and his wife, Jill of Omaha, Nebraska; Paula Johnson and her husband, Alvin, of Arcadia; Mark Owens of Lincoln, Janelle Masters, Julie Rothfuss and her husband, Kent; all of Hastings, Nebraska; Dwain Owens and his wife, Jill, Mary Young and her husband, Joel all of Columbus; Patricia Owens of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Shawn Owens of Broken Bow; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. During her final year in Alma, Bert was so fortunate to have some very special caretakers. There were many people who touched her life in this short period of time, but Terri Wenninghoff, Jennifer Wilbur, Michelle Tharman, Shannon Lynch, and Sharee Ring became part of her family, that she loved as her own.
