Obituary by Taylor Funeral Home Jerry Donald Hammers, 66, of Timpson, Texas, passed away on Friday, Oct. 2, 2015, in Nacogdoches, Texas. He was born on April 7, 1949, in Center, Texas, the son of the late Emrie Hammers and Sylvia Malke. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015, at Taylor Funeral Home in Timpson, Texas. Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Taylor Funeral Home with Bro. Larry Stegall officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Born and raised in Shelby County, Jerry graduated Timpson High School class of 1968. He then served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After serving his military time, Jerry went to work for Union Pacific Railroad and worked for over 40 years before retiring. Jerry was a very social person. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially if his children or grandchildren were involved. He loved living on the lake, growing flowers and gardening. Spending time outdoors was a favorite for Jerry. Jerry was a member of the American Legion Post No. 90 in Timpson, Texas. He was a Master Mason Timpson Lodge No. 437. Jerry is survived by his son, Jeremy Hammers of Timpson, Texas; daughters, Jena Westmoreland and husband, John, of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Chelsea Cooper and husband, Josh, of Timpson, Texas; brother, Gary Sterling of Jasper, Texas; sisters, Shirley Guidry of Plano, Texas, Darlyn Friskel and husband, John, of St. Louis, Mo., and Elaine Barnes of Plano, Texas; seven grandchildren, Jaxon Westmoreland, Jasper Westmoreland, Jolie Westmoreland, Kayden Cooper, Avery Hammers and Hailey Hammers; and a host of friends and family that will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emrie Hammers and Sylvia Malke. Pallbearers for Jerry will be Gary Duckworth, Jim Powers, Leland Moore, Robert Bell, Henry Spies, Randy Graves, Mike Bradshaw and Gerald Mackey. Honorary pallbearer is John Amos. Family would like to thank Leah Brasher, RN, with Hospice of East Texas and the entire second-floor staff at Nacogdoches Medical Center for the love, care and support given during our time of need.
