Ruth Marie Chovanec, 95, of La Grange, TX, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at Monument Hill Nursing Home. Born in Nelsonville, Texas on March 14, 1928, Ruth was the daughter of the late Albina (Janovsky) and Joseph Sisa. She was the widow of Bernard (Ben) Ignac Chovanec. After marrying August 12, 1946 in Fayetteville, Ruth and Ben lived in Waller and Fayetteville before settling in La Grange, Texas. Ruth was an excellent seamstress, loved to cook, can, and bake. Ruth loved her grandchildren unconditionally and will be remembered by them for her famous chicken fried steak, fried okra, and homemade jellies. After the death of her husband, Ruth, continued to keep up Ben's garden and mowed her own yard into her 80s. Every Christmas, Ruth and Ben spent hours shelling pecans to give bags of pecans to her children for Christmas, along with a jar of her famous jelly. Always a devoted homemaker, in 1968, Ruth began working part time outside of the home at La Grange Drug, followed by Dyer Pharmacy, as a full-time clerk and merchandiser for over 20 years. She worked part time at Schroeder Drug until her full retirement. A longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of La Grange, Ruth was faithfully involved in the Altar Society, led the rosary at Church, and was co-chairman of Funeral Lunch Committee and Chairman of Resolutions. She was involved in the Sacred Heart PTA for over 25 years, a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas of La Grange for 42 years, and KJZT for 63 years which she served as treasurer for many. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 5254 for 46 years and worked on a group committee with the Knights of Columbus for many years. She was one of the original volunteers at Second Chance Emporium, volunteered at AMEN, and delivered for Meals on Wheels into her 80s. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ben; her grandchildren, Julie Koch Lyons and Joseph Koch III. She was the last survivor of the siblings, sisters, Vlasta Pohl, Beatrice Zettle Strokes, Grace Eckelberg, Gardina Sisa, and Winona Rochen; and brothers, Isadore, Joe, Franklin, and Ladgie. Ruth is survived by three daughters, Shirley Koch and husband, Joe, Jr., of Clear Lake City, TX, Deborah Griffle and husband, Bob, of Lee's Summit, MO, Judith Langhamer and Frank Macaulay of La Grange, TX; and son, David Chovanec and wife, Mary, of Clear Lake City, TX; grandchildren, Angela Jackson (Martin), Sherri Bogan (Brad), Bradley Langhamer, Ava Chovanec, and Cara Chovanec; great-grandchildren, Hallie Ruth, Jackson, and Kendall Lyons, Evelyn Grace and Paul Jackson, Addie Marie and Kaylin Bogan; three step-grandchildren and two step-great- grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
