His death occurred at Haynes, Alabama, Thursday, January, 17, 1924, aged 62 years, 2 months and 15 days. He was a son of Thos. and Mary Lynas Hargitt. He was united in marriage to Mary Alice Roll of Effener, Illinois, April 2, 1865. To this union were born 11 children of whom 8 survive him, viz: Mason T. of Indiana, Richard W. of California, Charles L. of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Mary Martin of Illinois, Howard E. of California, Geo. W., John B. and Mrs. Omega B. Dennis of Alabama. Besides his wife and eight children he leaves to mourn his death, two brothers, Chas. W. of New York and Richard N. of Indiana, and one sister, Mrs. Jane Liddle, on half-sister, Mrs. Romania Lemmings, and one half-brother, Rev. Victor B., all of Indiana. He is also survived by nine grandchildren. By vocation Mr. Hargitt was a farmer, first in Illinois and Indiana and afterwards in Alabama. He united with the Christian church at an early age and has continued in active and spiritual membership ever since and always carried his church membership with the nearest local church. He was a member of the Uniform Rank, Knights of Pythias, of Medora. J. E. Hargitt was well known in the western part of Jackson County. He lived in Owen and Carr townships for 24 years. For 15 years he was a rural route carrier at Medora. He left there in 1918 to live on his farm in Alabama.
