Walter Edgar Johnson passed away Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2015, after a life filled with family, friends, and faith in Jesus. Service: Noon Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Wade Family Funeral Home, 4140 W. Pioneer Parkway, Arlington. Visitation: 11 a.m. to service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Walter was born in Rotan on May 1, 1927, the second of five children and the only boy born to Joe and Dovie Lee Johnson. Walter graduated from Rotan High School, where he played quarterback for the Yellowhammers football team and was voted Most Popular. He attended Texas Tech where he joined the Wranglers fraternity. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1945 and was stationed in Guam. Upon his return, he worked as a postal carrier. His life changed forever in Fort Worth in 1952, when he met and fell in love with Wilma Murray, who was the perfect complement to his calm and easygoing personality. Walter and Wilma had known each other for only a few months when they got married on Jan. 2, 1953. They were married for nearly 62 years until her passing in 2013. Upon his retirement, Walter and Wilma spent many wonderful days at their "ranch" in Tolar with their cows. Walter was a great dad to Katherine "Kathy" Johnson Knight and Joe Murray Johnson, who survive him. When his kids were young, Walter loved to "wrassle" with them and toss them in the air. He made sure they knew that he both liked and loved them. Walter worked for Armour & Co. selling meat for over 30 years. His job promotions took him from the Fort Worth Stockyards to Little Rock to Kansas City to Pittsburgh to Atlanta to Mobile, and then happily to Arlington. He loved his job and made many friends at Armour. Walter loved becoming a granddaddy to Julia Johnson, Allison Knight, Alexander Knight and JoEllen Johnson who survive him. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. The family wishes to thank Walter's kind caregivers at Castle Rock Assisted Living in Arlington. Published in Star-Telegram on Oct. 4, 2015
