"James D. Milliken, 92, a resident of Saratoga Retirement Community in Saratoga, CA, died Saturday, Sept. 5 of congestive heart failure. Jim Milliken was born August 19, 1923 in Fremont, NE, the eldest son of James "Dale" Milliken, Sr. and Marion Kastle Milliken, of North Bend, NE. He interrupted his university education at Swarthmore College to enlist in the US Army in 1944. A decorated First Lieutenant in the 4169th Quartermaster Corps 8th Army, he saw active duty in the Luzon, Philippines campaign, Japan and in Washington DC. Following his discharge, he graduated from Grinnell College, Iowa, in 1949, and pursued a graduate degree in journalism from Northwestern University. He worked in radio and broadcast management. Jim and Jane Little of Peoria. IL, were married in 1952 and subsequently moved to Southern California in 1956, where they began a 45 year career in residential real estate in Santa Barbara. Jim was President and Executive Officer of the Santa Barbara Board of Realtors and served on many of the California Association of Realtor's statewide boards and commissions. Top-producing brokers, their clients ranged from executive transferees from Delco and Martin Marietta to rock musician Warren Zevon. Jim moved to Saratoga Retirement Community following the 2003 death of his wife, and was one of its first residents. He was active in a variety of committees and programs. An avid reader and student of history, he had a significant personal library, and, in the past three years, enjoyed learning about the capabilities of his iPhone at the Apple Genius Bar. He was a member and supporter of the Nebraska Historical Society, the Commonwealth Club and many organizations dedicated to public and international affairs. He was proud to be a volunteer for 7 years in Stanford Medical School's Vaccine Program. He leaves his children Barbara (Richard) Pivnicka of Woodside, CA, Sara (John) Swanson of Santa Maria, Margaret Gant of Federal Way, WA, and Vincent (Lori) Milliken of Santa Ynez, CA. A son, Patrick, preceded him in death in 2010. He also leaves his brother and best friend Thomas J. Milliken of Fremont, NE, five grandchildren and many other family members who will miss him. A celebration of his life will be held at the Saratoga Retirement Community on October 1 for family and friends, especially his extended family of Saratoga Retirement Community residents.
