She married Jim Shuttlesworth, September 6, 1941. She began her teaching career in Sudan High School teaching typing and bookkeeping, but her career was interrupted by two important events. Jim volunteered for the draft and joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Shepherd Field in Wichita Falls, TX and a son, Larry Shuttlesworth, was born. When Jim was sent overseas, she and Larry returned home and lived with her parents and Freda taught at Circle Back, TX. Later, they moved to Muleshoe and she taught in the Muleshoe Elementary School until Jim returned from the war in 1946. Jim and Freda were then employed by the schools in Phillips, TX. Jim taught industrial arts and Freda was the volleyball coach for the next seventeen years at Phillips High School. Then she moved to the elementary school where she taught until they retired. She was a member of the Hutchinson, Hansford Credit Union and served as president from 1977-1979. She was an active member of the Texas Association of Volleyball at Abilene which was organized before the Texas Interscholastic League was established and served as president of the or-ganization one year. At that time, a state wide tournament was held in Abilene each year and Freda's team won the tournament ten years of the seventeen years she was a coach. She was a life member of the Texas State Teachers Association. After retiring they moved to Fritch, TX and lived there until they moved to Lubbock, TX in June of 1988. She is a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Lubbock. Jim Shuttlesworth passed away in Lubbock, January of 1998 and Freda continued living there taking care of her older sister, Lois Witherspoon, until she passed away. Freda then moved to Park Place in Amarillo in 2008 to be near family and friends. She leaves behind a son, Larry Shuttlesworth, of Clarendon, TX and Essex, Montana, and a grandson, Chris Shuttlesworth, of Lubbock, TX.
