John was the husband of Catherine Susan Long whom he married on 26 Sep 1860 in KY. John was brought to the U.S. as a child by his parents about 1840. They settled in Meade Co. (Garnetsville) near Louisville, KY. John was apprenticed as a tailor. Reportedly the surname was originally "Schumann". John dropped the "c" and one "n" later and spelled his name "Shuman". He married in KY and apparently moved to TX about 1879 and settled for a time, farming, in Collin County. In 1880 he and Cate are listed in the Collin Co., TX census. They moved to Eastland Co. sometime before 1890. John and Cate had three sons (Leander, Clarence and William) and five daughters (Annie Belle, Lula, Julia, Amanda and Mary).
