Bio

John M. “Jack” Shanahan, 90, of Grand Island died Thursday, September 3, 2015. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. Leo’s Catholic Church. Father Don Buhrman will officiate. Private family burial of ashes will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family. Jack was born June 29, 1925, at Morse Bluff, NE, to John and Dorothy (Ladenburger) Shanahan. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 67 years, Jannelle; son, Bradley Shanahan of Grand Island; daughters, Teresa (James) Brooks of Grand Island and Lori (Russell) Koch of Seymore, MO; five grandchildren, Jami (Faron) Riley, Travis (Cara) Koch, Traci (Brad) Coonts, Jodi (Corey) Smith and Morgan (Chris) Talbott; and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters and a brother. Jack grew up in Morse Bluff, graduating from Cedar Bluffs High School, Class of 1943. He entered the United States Navy on June 8, 1944 and was honorably discharged May 1, 1946. He was united in marriage to Jannelle Garrett on April 24, 1948 in San Francisco, CA. Following their marriage they lived in San Francisco before moving to Grand Island in 1950. Jack owned and operated Nifty Drive In from 1950 until 1966. He was then employed as an agent for State Mutual Life Insurance Co. until his retirement. He was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, the Platt Duetsche, VFW and the Elks Club. Jack loved music and loved to dance. Following the big bands, he and Janelle danced many a night away. He also loved to show his champion Golden Retrievers. His family will never forget his enthusiasm for travel and his ability to never meet a stranger.
