Bio

Daughter of Don R. & Mary Ellen (Pokorney) Cain. Yuvonne "Vonnie" Beth Cain was called home to her Lord and Savior on January 30 2003. She died at Valley County Hospital of chronic lung problems. Even to the end of her life she was a fighter. She was a life long resident of Burwell, Nebraska. Vonnie was a devoted Daughter, beloved Sister, an adored Aunt and loving Godparent. Vonnie was born on January 5, 1931 in Burwell, NE to Don Robert Cain and Mary Ellen (Pokorney) Cain . She was the second oldest of the families six children. Baptized and brought in to the faith on October 20, 1935 by Rev Brohm. She was Confirmed in the Lutheran faith on March 25, 1945. Her confirmation verse of John 10 27-29 served as a guide through out her life. She received her education from Burwell Public Schools. In 194_ she graduated from Burwell Jr.-Sr. High School and began her working career as a secretary. She held employment at the following businesses: Bredthauer Auto Sales, Burwell Live Stock Market, Wagner Insurance, Bank of Burwell, and Burwell Insurance Agency. Vonnie was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. She loved sharing the love of her Savior and served him through her membership and leadership in Dorcas Society and Aid Association for Lutherans. She served as church secretary and church treasurer. Vonnie was also a Sunday school teacher and typed the churches bulletins for many years. Vonnie had many hobbies that included ceramics, crafts, and bowling. She also enjoyed attending the sporting, music, forensic, and 4-H events of her nephews and nieces. She was a member of community organizations including: the American Legion Auxiliary and a 4-H youth leader. She is survived by her sister Mrs. Betty Brass of Bridgeport, NE. Two brothers: Mr. Don V. Cain and wife, MaryLou, and Mr. Paul J Cain Sr. and wife Velma, all of Burwell, NE and her 13 nephews and nieces: Dianna Linn (VanSlyke) Brown, Jack VanSlyke, Mike VanSlyke, Gene VanSlyke, Caryl VanSlye, and Vonnie (VanSlyke) Gustafson, Jeanine (Brass) Chikos, Peg (Brass) Foster, Gene Brass, Dr. Donnie Cain, Randy L. Cain, Rev. Paul J Cain Jr., and Candace J. Cain, their families, cousins, neighbors and friends. Vonnie was preceded in death by her father, Don Robert, mother Mary Ellen (Pokorney) Cain, a brother, John C. Cain, and a sister RoseMarie Cain VanSlyke.
