Bio

Mrs. Bessie Marguerite Viale died on August 13 in Seward, Alaska, while visiting at the home of her son. She was born December 19, in Bull Creek and later taught in the Mt. Hood grammar school in Oregon. She had made her home in Eureka the past 21 years, and was a member of the First Christian Church, held a life membership in the American Legion auxiliary, served in various offices in the district council of the PTA and was a member of Worthington PTA. She was the mother of the late Robert M. Viale, Congressional Medal of Honor winner in the U.S. Army during World War II, and the late Raymond R. Viale, who was lost at Iwo Jima during that war. Surviving are her husband, David Viale of Eureka; sons Marvin Viale of Seward, Alaska; Jack, Donald and Leonard Viale all of Eureka; daughters Mrs. Josephine Burns of Hoopa and Mrs. Margaret Halkides of Van Nuys; a brother, Theo R. Lewis of Eureka; grandchildren Marlene, Karen, Janet and Nancy Viale of Seward, Alaska, Charles Viale of San Francisco, Dennis and Robert Halkides of Van Nuys, Sidney and Janet Burns of Hoopa, and David, Paula, Jeanne and Christopher Viale of Eureka; and two nephews, Ralph and George Lewis of Eureka. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 1:30 p.m. from the Cooper Mortuary Chapel of the Ferns with the Rev. John Stubbs officiating. Interment will be in Ocean View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Noah Lewis, Sam Halkides, J. Galinoff, Tom Triplett, Raymond Sandusky and Percy Trumbull. Published in the Times Standard on August 24, 1957
