Bio

KEARNEY — Dennis J. Gibbons, 74, of Riverdale died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2015, at CHI Health Good Samaritan in Kearney. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Kearney. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Prairie Center. Dennis was born on Feb. 1, 1941, in Kearney to William and Gertrude (Paitz) Gibbons. He grew up and received his education in Pleasanton and graduated from Pleasanton High School. He married Ila Capellan on April 20, 1961, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Prairie Center. The couple farmed until 1966 when he started his well drilling company, Gibbons Well Drilling. Dennis continued to own and operate the business until his death. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Prairie Center until the parish closed. Dennis was a kind man and never met a stranger. He loved to attend auctions, and throughout the years he had collected numerous model trains. He had an unbelievable understanding of mechanics and could fix about anything, many times where others had failed. Dennis was also an avid truck pulling fan. He especially loved being pit boss for his son, Mark. His love for truck pulling has been passed down to his grandsons, as well. Most of all, Dennis loved spending time with his family and was very proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandson. Survivors include his wife, Ila of Riverdale; a daughter, Krystal Standage and husband Bob of Colby, Kan.; a son, Mark Gibbons and wife Joy of Riverdale; four grandchildren, Brandon Standage and wife Sarah of Colby, Ashley Standage of Killeen, Texas, Will Gibbons of Litchfield and Bronson Gibbons of Riverdale; a great-grandson, Rees Standage of Colby; a sister, Hilda Jeffers and husband Rex of North Platte; a sister-in-law, Joan Williams of Kearney; and several nieces and nephews. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Paul Gibbons; and two sisters, Margaret Gibbons and Irene Macek.
