Bio
M. Marillyn (Marty) Bretz was born on 2/22/28 in Los Angeles California to Benjamin and Viola Hronek. She peacefully passed away at age 87, on August 13, 2015, at the West Bend Care Center. After her mother’s death in 1935, Marty moved to Pocahontas to be raised by her Aunt Anna Hronek on the farm. Marty graduated from Sacred Heart high school in Pocahontas in 1946. After graduation she moved to Los Angeles, California where she worked for many years at Southern California Gas Company as an administrative secretary. She also had worked for a corporate law firm as a legal secretary. Marty married the love of her life, E. Eldon Bretz in 1958, in California. In 1965 they settled in Pocahontas to start farming. Eldon passed away in May of 1969. Marty loved watching the Chicago Cubs win a few baseball games, she loved gardening and baking. Marty’s kids remember well the smell of Kolaches. Marty was a member of Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church and a past member of the CDofA. Survivors include her son Doug, of Pocahontas, daughter, Theresa of Pocahontas and son Mark of Mapelton, MN, three grandchildren, Matthew (Dani) Valentine of Eagle Grove, Nicholas Valentine of Fort Dodge and Ashley Bretz of Spencer and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon, her parents, Benjamin and Viola, her Aunt, Anna Hronek, her half-sister, Rochelle Johnson.
