A Mass of Christian Burial for Joan K. Burival, age 78, of O’Neill, will be at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, August 15, 2015, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in O’Neill. Burial will be in the O’Neill Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, August 14, 2015, from 5-8 P.M., with a 7:00 P.M. Rosary at Biglin’s Mortuary in O’Neill. Rev. Bernard Starman will officiate. Joan passed away early Tuesday morning August 11, 2015, at her home in O’Neill. Memorials may be made to The American Diabetes Association or St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in O’Neill. She is survived by her 3 sons; Tom Shields and wife Peggy, Dan Shields and wife Luann, and Mike Shields, all of O’Neill, NE, 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and 1 sister, Carolyn Donohoe of O’Neill, NE. Joan was born on September 29, 1936, in Bassett, NE, to James and Lucille (Grenier) Donohoe. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1954 and was valedictorian. Joan attended nursing college at St. Catherine’s in Omaha for 3 years. She married Charles Shields on September 13, 1958 in O’Neill, NE. To this union, 3 children were born; Tom, Dan, and Mike. Charles passed away on October 13, 1966. Joan met Frank Burival, Jr, and they were married on October 28, 1989, in Las Vegas, NV. He passed away on December 21, 2006. Joan worked at Avera St. Anthony’s from 1980 until June of 1993. She retired as an R.N. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Altar Society in O’Neill. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, 2 husbands, one sister, and an infant brother. Joan was nicknamed "Sam" by her co-workers at St. Anthony's Hospital.
