Benda, 73, of 206 W. State Street, Toledo, in the Marshalltown Area Community Hospital, where he had been a patient since July 15. He had been in failing health with cancer the past six months. Funeral services were held in the Chapel of Mason-Hand Funeral Home, Tama, with Rev. Chet Davis, pastor of the First United Methodist church, Toledo, in charge. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Toledo. Mrs. Lyle Campbell was organist and accompanied Jim Mochal in two selections, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art". Pallbearers were Adolph Kriz, Sherman Quigley, Henry Ronfeldt, Gary Benda, Jon Ebersole, and Elvertus Ploehn. William J. Benda was born on April 18, 1907, near Toledo, son of James and Mary Pavlicek Benda. He attended the rural schools in the area of his birth. His first marriage in 1934 was to Miss Alma Vajnar of Rochester, Minnesota, and the couple farmed near Toledo. His second marriage was on September 9, 1940, was to Moscelyne Hatton of Toledo, in Kirksville, Missouri. The couple resided in Tama and later in Toledo. Since 1956, Mr. Benda was employed by Tama County as truck driver, retiring in 1972. He was baptized into the Catholic faith and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 2828, Tama-Toledo, of which he was a charter member. He is survived by his widow, Moscelyne; a step-daughter, Delores (Mrs. Paul) Maiden, Carroll; five step-grandchildren and a great-grandchild; a brother, Albin F. Benda and a sister, Anna (Mrs. Ed) Papesh, both of Toledo; and several more distant relatives. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother. Obituary from unknown source
