Willis was one of 13 Children born to William Henry Cobb and Margaret Ann Beasley in Union County, Mississippi between 1867 and 1894. We believe that he was the Simon D. Cobb, age 18, born Feb 1882, who was recorded in the household of William Henry Cobb in Union County, MS in the 1900 Census. William Henry Cobb's oldest son was Simon Douglas Cobb born 14 Feb 1866...he was 34 years old in 1900, married and already out of his father's house. Willis came to Ellis County, Texas between 1900 and 1902 and on 13 Dec 1902 he married Ada Eveline Billings in Waxahachie. His mother Margaret died back in Union County, MS on 14 Nov 1902...just one month before his marriage in Texas. His younger brother, Rush Coarder Cobb (born in Sept 1889) followed Willis to Texas after his mother died and was living with Willis at the time of the 1910 Census. On June 11, 1910 Rush enlisted in the US Navy at Dallas, Texas and had a long and distinguished career in the Navy. Willis and Ada had 5 children born between 1902 and 1910 (a sixth was still born). They were living and farming near Midlothian in Ellis County at the time of the 1910 Census. Willis disappeared in late 1910 or 1911 and was not heard from again. It is not known exactly when he died or where (or if) he is buried. One family story told that Willis left home with a mule drawn wagon of cotton headed for the cotton gin and never returned. After the ginning, he would have had a significant amount of cash for selling the cotton. Another family legend has it that he was murdered by a brother-in-law in an argument over money and his body tossed down an abandoned well shaft.
