George Washington Merchant, age 83, a resident of Summerdale, Ala., died Jan. 31 at a Tuscaloosa Hospital. Funeral services were held Feb. 2 at Higgins Chapel with the Rev. Bryant Scott, minister of Foley Baptist Church, officiating. Interment was in Wynn Cemetery in Summerdale. Active Pallbearers were John Hadley, Ellis Hadley, Shomo Hadley, Emmett Gulledge, William Roberts, and T. E. McKinney. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. George W. Merchant, Pensacola, Fla.; four daughters, Mrs. John T. Hadley, Foley, Mrs. Lou M. Jernigan, Boerne, Texas, Mrs. R. V. McDaniel, Silsbee, Texas, Mrs. T. E. McKinney, Montgomery, Ala.; five sons, George W. Merchant, Jackson Miss., A. C. Merchant, LaPorte, Texas, Malacha Merchant, Arcadia, Texas, Johnnie Merchant, Boerne, Texas, William A. Merchant, Boerne, Texas; one brother, Ira Merchant, Robertsdale; one sister, Mrs. Florence Mallone, Summerdale; 17 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
