Elizabeth Bayless (also spelled "Bailes" and other variations) was born Aug. 7, 1809 in Washington County, Tenn., near Jonesborough. Her parents were Daniel Lucas Bayless and Mary Ireland. Daniel’s parents were Reuben Bayless and Margaret Lucas. Washington County marriage records indicate that Elizabeth Bayless and William Duncan married Aug. 21, 1827. Elizabeth had 9 or 10 siblings. She and two sisters, Zilla and Priscilla (and their husbands), settled in the Bogard Community near the base of English Mountain on land purchased by their father. Zillia was married to James Acton and Priscilla, to J. J. Kyker. Bayless brothers, an older sister and their parents remained in Washington, County. William and Elizabeth raised a large family in the Bogard Community, but most of their children left the area. (See William's Find A Grave memorial for more family history.) Burial records for Elizabeth (Bayless) Duncan are not obtainable. But she was likely buried in the Bayless family (Acton, Duncan and Kyker) graveyard, which is known today as the Kyker Cemetery. She does not, however, have a readable grave marker there. [A PERSONAL NOTE: Elizabeth Duncan's sister, Priscilla (Bayless) Kyker, was my great-great grandmother. During the 1950s when I was a high school student, I worked for great-uncle Arnold Kyker a few days during the summer on a portion of the Bayless farmland harvesting wheat for $6 a day. Arnold, Priscilla’s grandson, leased the farmland from owner Dora (Hartsell) Kyker, his aunt by marriage. The now-deceased “Aunt Dorie,” whom I knew during my boyhood, was a widow of Priscilla’s son Joseph Addison. The Kyker Cemetery is located on this property. --Gene Bryant]
