Bio
Helen Opal Phillips was the daughter of Harry Harrison Phillips (1872–1952). There is some debate whether she is the daughter of Jessie Mae Funk or Emma Grace Cain (1878–1904). Harry Phillips had children by both women and was involved in a long affair with Jessie Mae for years before Emma died bringing into question Helen's biological mother. It is speculated the affair started around January 1900 when Jessie Mae was only 14 years old and an arrangement was made for Emma Grace Cane to claim Helen as her own in order to avoid social stigmatization and keep up the image of the ideal family. Helen was born roughly 9 months after the alleged affair took place. This is an ongoing question that may never be answered.
