Bio

Vitus R. Brungardt, 85, Hays, died Monday, April 28, 2014, at Hays Medical Center. He was born Nov. 10, 1928, in Gorham to Edward J. and Catherine (Bellendir) Brungardt. He married Gertrude M. (Dome) on Aug. 30, 1948, in Pfeifer. She preceded him in death Dec. 26, 1976. He later married Gladys (Leiker) on Aug. 25, 1977, in Hutchinson. He attended school in Gorham. He worked at Dillon's and later S & W Supply, retiring in 2004. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and St. Joseph 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, spending time with his family, grandchildren and was an avid Royal's fan. Survivors include his wife, of the home, two sons, Larry F. Brungardt and wife, Terri, Hutchinson, Keith A. Brungardt and wife, Beverly, Vincent; a daughter, Cindy Huser and husband, Bryan, Hays; three stepsons, LaVerne Lang, Jr. and wife, Pam, Tribune, Norman Lang and wife, Rose, La Crosse, and Mark Lang and wife, Lori, Hays; a stepdaughter, Mary Lou Engel, of the home; a brother, Hubert Brungardt and wife, Shirley, Hays; three sisters, Laura Posednik, Fort Worth, Texas, Marie Orth and husband, Frank, McPherson, and Teckla Baker, Hays; a brother-in-law, Floris and wife, Bernie, Pfeifer; two sisters-in-law, Jan Brungardt, Kansas City, Mo., and Josepha Dome, Hays; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Leroy Brungardt; a great-grandchild, Aden Brungardt; a step son-in-law, Cliff Engel; and a stepson, Patrick Lang. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 18th and Vine; inurnment in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at Cline's Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd Street, Hays, KS 67601. A vigil/Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, both at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church or Hays Medical Center Foundation, in care of the mortuary. Hays Daily News, 4/28/2014
