Della Elizabeth Novak was born November 21, 1929 in Fairchild in rural Fort Bend County, Texas. She was the second of four girls born to Willie and Gabriella (Vacek) Novak. She grew up on a farm where she and her sisters picked cotton. She met Leslie Silhan and married him on September 18, 1949. They lived briefly in Rosenberg before settling in their new home in Houston's Sunset Heights. They were faithful parishioners of Christ the King Catholic Church and active members of SOKOL. Leslie worked for the Texaco Oil Company, which necessitated his regular travel. Della managed the house and raised their three daughters and five sons, in addition to caring for her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Della was an avid gardener and painter, and she crocheted numerous baby blankets and snowflake ornaments for her family. Her kitchen was busiest each weekend when she prepared burgers on Saturday and a full Sunday dinner. Without knowing who was coming, there was always more than enough for all. Her Czech heritage will continue through the many family recipes she shared. Della passed suddenly from this life at 7:28 pm on Thursday, June 11, 2015, at the age of 85 with Leslie and her family at her side. Della was preceded in death by her parents and eldest sister. She is survived by her husband, two sisters, three daughters, five sons, 13 grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. She was much loved and will be greatly missed.
