Harry W. (Hal) Hagen died June 8, 2015, at Haven of Globe in Globe, Arizona. He had a frontier spirit that always looked to the future, did not believe in retirement, and called Globe home for most of his 87 years. His greeting, ‘You’re looking good,’ brought a smile to many. Hal was born July 20, 1927, in Grangeville Idaho, the first of two sons for Harry J. and Thelma Webb Hagen, owners of Hagen Construction Company. Hal’s early love of trucks and dirt moving became a lifelong passion, and he remained an integral part of the company for several decades. On the family ranch, cowboys Pat and Ollie helped Hal hone his skills and instincts with animals and raised his interest in ranching. After graduating from Globe High School, he entered the Army Air Corps. Assigned to the 1377th Army Air Force Base Unit at Chanute Field, Illinois, he completed welding operations of aircraft structures, assemblies and parts. There, through a mutual friend, he met and married Edith Myrtle Johnson in 1948. He later became a licensed pilot of single engine aircraft. After discharge from the army, Hal attended the University of Arizona before transferring to LeTourneau Technical Institute in Longview, Texas where he earned a B. S. in Welding Engineering. His studies and work included the development of the electric wheel drive system. Upon graduation from LeTourneau Tech, Hal returned to Globe to rejoin family operations both in construction and ranching. Soon after the sale of Hagen Construction, the Fritz Place, and Government Springs Ranch, he started the Hal Hagen Construction Company and partnered with Mercer Motor Coach to ferry fire fighters and tourists throughout the western United States. In 1981, he met and married Edythe Irene Edmunds Dalgarn. He was with Sullivan Paving of Globe, when a personal accident ended his working life at the age of 80. Deeply devoted to family, friends, patriotism, work ethic, and his belief in Jesus Christ, his church and worldwide Christian missions, he loved adventure and had seen much of the world with family and friends. He taught his values to his daughters and vigorously defended them to anyone. Hal never met a stranger, rarely forgot a kindness, and laughed vigorously. His life motto combined Joshua 24:15, ‘…as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord,’ with his own, ‘Stay with it.’ Though limited to a wheel chair for many years, he never abandoned the hope of walking again and on June 8th, he did, with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ by his side. Hal was preceded in death by his parents Harry J. Hagen and Thelma W. Hagen, wife Edythe Irene Edmunds Dalgarn Hagen, sister-in-law Jean Gladdish Hagen. He is survived by his brother, Richard D. Hagen, daughters, L. Hagen and Elaine Hagen McBride (John), stepdaughter Diana Church (Dan), stepson Robert Dalgarn, nephews Sidney Hagen (Diane) and Timothy Hagen, four step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 18th at Bulman Miles Funeral Home, 237 S Sutherland Street, Globe AZ 85501. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Globe Church of the Nazarene, 226 E Holly Road, Globe, AZ 85501.
