Crane funeral director Dallas Morning News; July 31, 1965 They were considered the best of pals – Frank Joseph Petr and Michael Garrett. Their friendship had been a lasting one, “eight or nine years,” according to Michael, 14. Death separated the pals Friday. Frank, 15, succumbed in St. Paul Hospital five days after he had been admitted as a gunshot victim The gun discharged in the hands of Michael Monday afternoon at the home of his widowed mother, Mrs. Faye Garrett. Frank had arrived at the house late Monday morning and the boys spent the next hour watching television and talking. Michael proudly showed Frank his mother’s 785 mm automatic she kept in the bedroom He displayed a toy holster he said he was “remodeling” to fit the gun. Michael remembered ejecting a shell from the gun before letting Frank examine it. The gun was laid aside several times as the boys’ interest turned elsewhere. But then they would return to it for more examination. When Frank decided it was time to go home, about 1:30 pm, he rose from a couch. Michael, sitting with the gun, rose from a chair. It was at that moment the gun exploded. The bullet struck Frank in the mouth. Justice of the Peace Joe B. Brown Jr. rule the death an accident. (details about funeral and survivors omitted here)
