Second World War casualty of the U.S. Merchant Marine. He was Master of the American freighter SS Oakmar (Calmar Lines, Port of New York). He was lost, along with one other ship's officer and four crewman, when the German submarine U-71 stopped and then sank the unescorted Oakmar approximately 300 miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The 30 survivors were picked up their lifeboats on March 22nd by the ship Stavros and landed in Bermuda two days later.
