Bio

Nellie Luetta Beard was born May 6, 1882 at Reno, Leavenworth County, Kansas. She was the ninth of ten children born to Samuel & Jane Ann (Hull) Beard. Most of her childhood was spent in North Lawrence. As a young woman, Nellie worked as a seamstress in the Wilder Brothers shirt factory in Lawrence. At the age of 25, she married Frank Raymond Jennings in Lawrence. In 1910, Frank and Nell were living in Junction City, Kansas, where he was working as a plumber. By 1914, they were living in Manhattan, Kansas, where their only child, Raymond, was born. By 1930, Frank and Nell had moved to Topeka. In the 1940 census, they were living at 1424 E. 23rd Street, where they continued to live until their deaths.
