Bio

Cassie Marie Brown McDaniel peacefully left this earthly life on May 14, 2015 in Blackfoot. Marie was born October 11, 1924 in Blackfoot to Seth Wilford Brown and Cassie Isom Brown. She was their first child and was born in a small maternity home on West Idaho Street. She grew up on a farm on Ferry Butte Road and attended 1st through 4th grades at the Reservation School at Gibson, which is near Fort Hall. The fall that she would have attended 5th grade, the Reservation School was consolidated with the Blackfoot School District and she went by bus to Blackfoot for her education. She wasn’t able to attend many school functions because of the distance she lived from town and the many chores there was to do after school. She found great satisfaction in helping her parents and was very content to spend her evenings at home with them. She especially loved helping her Dad in the fields where she thinned beets, hauled hay, picked potatoes and drove the tractor. She would sometimes go with him on jobs to other farms and was so proud to help him in this way. Marie graduated from Blackfoot High School and LDS Seminary in 1942. She began working at State Hospital South, running their telephone switchboard and she also began to date Alton McDaniel. They were married on January 22, 1943 in the Salt Lake City Temple and eventually settled in Riverton. Together they raised seven children. Marie loved her family and served them tirelessly. She was an excellent cook and seamstress. Her delicious rolls, chocolate cake and pies were not only enjoyed by her family but were also shared with friends and neighbors who looked forward to her generosity. She has won several blue ribbons for her baking entries in the Eastern Idaho State Fair. Marie sewed many of her children’s clothing and scraps of them can be found in quilts she has made. She taught herself to crochet and her handiwork is enjoyed in the homes of her children and grandchildren. She raised a bountiful vegetable garden from which she canned countless jars of fruits and vegetables. She raised beautiful flowers with pink roses being her favorite. Marie was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served in the Primary, Young Women and Relief Society organizations. Marie served two missions with her husband. One was a Tri-Stake Indian Mission and the other to the Philippines. They also served together in the Idaho Falls Temple. Marie is survived by five of her seven children, Diana (Ronald) Rhoades of Idaho Falls, Paul (Linda De) of Blackfoot, Mike (Doreen) of Salt Lake City, Utah, Madalone (Blair) Harker of Blackfoot, Carol Luddy of Pocatello, daughter-in-law, Linda (Marvin) Yancey of Blackfoot, a brother, Sam of Dallas, Texas, a sister, Helen of Ellis, Idaho, 30 grandchildren, 88 great grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren and 1 great-great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alton, her parents, Seth and Cassie Brown, siblings, Lois, Audrey, Sethi and two sons, Stanley and Arlin. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at 12 noon at the Riverton LDS Church, 404 S. 900 W., Blackfoot. The family will meet with friends and relatives from10 to 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, prior to services at the church. Interment will follow at the Grove City Cemetery in Blackfoot. Condolences may be sent to the family online at: www.hawkerfuneralhome.com. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to Dr. Paul Beckett and all of her caregivers for their exceptional love and care of her and her family. “We are deeply grateful.”
