Bio

James “Rock” Clifford Hurley, 71, of Seward, passed away Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014, after an extended battle with cancer. James was born January 18, 1943 at St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island, NE to Claude and Kathryn (Keck) Hurley. He attended Hastings High School where he excelled at football, baseball, and track and field. After high school, James enlisted in the U.S. Army as an infantrymen. He was later qualified as Air Assault and was stationed at Baumholder, Germany, Ft. Lewis, Washington, and Ft. Riley, Kansas. During his time in the Army, James married Janet Hilger of Columbus, NE, on Oct. 5, 1963, at St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus, NE. After being honorable discharged from the U.S. Army in 1966, he went to work for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and retired in 1998 after 32 years. James also started Hurley’s Golf and Repair golf store in Havelock in 1987. After retirement, James worked for the City of Seward and also delivered mail for the U.S. Post Office in the Seward area. James was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and attending the horse races. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Janet; son and daughter-in-law, James Jr. and Lisa Hurley, York; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Jennifer Hurley, Lincoln; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Kristi Hurley, Lincoln; brothers Charles (Doris) Hurley, Lakewood, CA; Duane Hurley, San Diego, CA; grandchildren Julie Hottovy, Callasandra Hurley, Zachary Hurley, Morgan Hurley, Matthew Hurley, Ashton Hurley, Tyler Hurley, and Madisyn Hurley. He is preceded in death by his parents, Claude Hurley and Kathryn Dick; brothers Gerald Hurley and Richard Hurley, and sister Phyllis Fiero. A celebration of James’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 22nd at Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home, 4040 A St. Lincoln, NE. No visitation, cremation. Memorials given to the family will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
