Bio

Rex E. Delaney, 85, of Grand Island, NE, died Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at CHI Health St. Francis of Grand Island, surrounded by his family. Mass of the Christian Burial will be Saturday, May 16, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Leo’s Catholic Church. The celebrant is Rev. Donald A. Buhrman. Following a lunch burial will be in the Fullerton Catholic Cemetery, in Fullerton, NE, with a 1:30 p.m. committal service with full military honors. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Rex was born Oct. 31, 1929, in Fullerton, to Joe and Viola (Besch) Delaney. He attended elementary school at the nearby country school, Riverview District #37. Rex finished his studies at Fullerton High School and graduated in 1947. After high school, he enlisted in the Navy and served on the USS Latimer for two and a half years. After his military service, he returned to Fullerton to farm with his father. Rex married Lucille Ramaekers on Jan. 5, 1957, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Genoa, Neb. He continued with his crop and livestock operation in Fullerton. Rex was a member of the American Legion Post 151 and St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Fullerton. Rex and Lucille were avid travelers, adventuring throughout the United States and abroad. They raised their four daughters in Fullerton. Rex farmed until the late 1990s and gradually retired from farming. After moving to Grand Island in 1993, he pursued his hobbies of woodworking and gardening. He was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church. Preceding him in death were his parents, a sister, Mary Lou, and a brother-in-law, Claire Hansen. Survivors include his wife of 58 years; daughters Julie Cahoj (Greg), Atwood, Kansas, Kris Hanson (Tom), Maple Grove, Minn., Lynda Delaney, Denver, Colo., and Terri Haselhorst (Loren), Randolph, Neb.; eight grandchildren; a sister Jolene Hays (Bob), Santa Fe., N.M., and numerous nieces, nephews and close friends
