Bio
Jeannette A. Smeder of Bellingham, WA, passed away on Monday, February 25, 2008. She was 91, born in Bellingham on November 26, 1916, to Carrie (Pickel) and Albert Riggs. Jeannette married Ludwig Smeder in Bellingham on February 19, 1960. She began working at the Salvation Army in 1950 and retired in 1981 as an Admin. Secretary. Her work there as a soldier of the Bellingham Corps, at the Thrift Shop and with the Thanksgiving baskets and Social Services was valued and part of the legacy she is remembered for. She also sold the "War Cry" magazine. In her spare time, Jeannette enjoyed gardening, beaches, boating, travelling, and cooking. She was preceded in death by her mother in 1962, father Albert Riggs in 1951, Alford Riggs in 1958, sister Frances Riggs-Klein in 1961, brother Walter Riggs in 1976, and husband Ludwig in 1998. She is survived by her sons: Albert (Judy) Sperry of Burlington and Robert Sperry of Stanwood; 6 grandchildren: Deniece, Alita, Brenda, Alicia, Robert and Steven; 14 great-grandchildren; half-brothers: Albert Riggs, Jr. of Des Moines and David Riggs of Naches; and sisters-in-law: Marguerite Riggs of Bellingham and Marian Sperry of Everett. Visitation will be on Thursday, February 28th, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and on Friday, February 29th, from 9:00 AM until 12:00 Noon at Bayview Chapel (Lakeway & Woburn). A Memorial Service will be at 11:00 AM on Friday at the Salvation Army with the Graveside Service at 1:00 PM at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 2912 Northwest Ave., Bellingham 98225 or Whatcom Hospice Foundation, 800 E. Chestnut, #1-C, Bellingham 98225.
