ORD — Joseph Pokorney, 94, of Ord died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at Valley County Hospital in Ord. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ord Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Debra Tompsett-Welch will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to services Saturday at the funeral home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie, in 1999. Mr. Pokorney was born July 28, 1910, in a sod house on the family farm six miles west of Ord to Anton and Fannie (Burian) Pokorney. Survivors include nieces and nephews. Joseph received his education at School District 26 in Valley County. He worked on the family farm until he was inducted into the Army in 1942, and served for 3 1/2 years in both European and Pacific theaters. After returning home, he bought a farm and started farming. He married Elsie Hynek on July 12, 1956. They farmed together, raising chickens, ducks, geese, and gardening. Elsie passed away Nov. 23, 1999. Joseph entered the Valley County Nursing Home in August of 2000. He was also preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Frank, Anton, John, James, Albert, and infant Willie; and four sisters, Tracy Krajnik, Mary Krajnik, Julia Nevrivy, and Agnes Gerdes.
