Roy Alfred Mares, 77, of Burwell, Nebraska died April 9, 2015 at the Valley County Health Systems Hospital in Ord, Nebraska. Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Monday, April 13, 2015 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burwell. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell. Pastor David Dobbertien will officiate. Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements. Roy was born October 16, 1937 in Ulysses, Nebraska to Louis and Clara (Hunsche) Mares. When he was five his family moved to Burwell. He graduated from Burwell High School in 1955. Roy joined the Nebraska Army National Guard in 1961 and was active for six years. Roy married Frances K. Spilinek on September 29, 1962 in Ord, Nebraska. They lived in the home Roy grew up in northwest of Burwell. Roy ranched and in 1976 he started M&R Sickle Bars. Roy was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing, camping, black powder shoots, music and dancing. Roy is survived by his wife Frances Mares of Burwell, Nebraska. Four children, Karen Homes of Lincoln, Nebraska, Mark and Lori Mares of Burwell, Nebraska, Cheryl Weekley of Kearney, Nebraska and John Mares of Lincoln, Nebraska. Nine grandchildren, Amanda Homes, Zachary Homes, Tyler Mares, Molly Mares, Casey Weekley, Heidi Weekley, Cody Weekley, Raegan Mares and Jackson Mares. A special niece and nephew, Kathy Mann and Scott Krause and many other nieces and nephews. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and sister-in-law, Curtis and Deloras Mares and a sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Warren Krause.
