Bio

Abram Harshaw was the son of Philip Powell HARSHAW 1811 – 1904 and Anna Catherine 1 CORPENING 1817 – 1908. Abram's known siblings were: Julius Harshaw 1835 – 1875; Jacob Jake Monroe Harshaw 1837 – 1924; Ann Elvira Harshaw 1840 – 1927; Aaron Washington Harshaw 1842 – 1912; Martha Jane Harshaw 1845 – 1939; Phatima Harshaw 1849 – 1908; Mary E. Harshaw 1852 – 1916 and George Harshaw 1854 – 1908. In the 1850 census Abram was about 3 years old, and living with his parents and six siblings in rural Cherokee, North Carolina. His father was a farmer with an estate of $1000.00. In the 1860 census Abram and his family were now living in rural Polk, Dade, Missouri. His father, a farmer, had a real estate of $3500.00 and $3000.00 in personal property. Collin County, Texas, Marriage Index, 1800-2010 confirms that Abram Harshaw married Laura Carter in s wedding ceremony in Collin Co., Texas, in 1874. From this union the following known children were born: George Milton Harshaw 1876 – 1922 D. E. Harshaw 1879; Julia I Harshaw 1884 – 1890 and Rosa I Harshaw 1888 – 1934. The 1880 census Abram was farming in Grayson Co., Texas. He and Laura were parents of two children. A news paper article revealed that Abram died on May 16 1999, a victim of a murder. In an article from family sources said that Abram Harshaw was ranching and raising rice near Alta Loma, Galveson County, Texas. Shortly after moving there from Grayson County, he was killed by cattle rustlers, and his body was dumped in a water trough. According to the Rockdale Messenger on Thursday, June 1, 1899 a preliminary examination of Frank Chapman for killing Abe Harshaw was held in Angleton, Texas. The defendant was remanded without bail. "The Criminal Court has been busy all this week. The only case of any consequence that has been tried yet is the case against Frank Chapman, charged with the murder of Abe Harshaw in 1899. The verdict of the jury was 'not guilty.'" It was a sad day for Laura Carter Harshaw when she laid her beloved Abram to "Rest in Peace" in the village burial ground of Alta Loma Cemetery, Santa Fe, Galveston County, Texas.
