Grand Island (Nebraska) Independent Wednesday, 17 February 1988 Lawrence H. Gerdes, 74, of Rt. 1, Box 18A, Alda, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, at Grand Island. Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. Robert Chamberlain will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be...at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home... Mr. Gerdes was born April 23, 1913, at St. Libory, the son of William and Agnes Buresch Gerdes. He grew up and attended parochial school at St. Libory. He married Agnes Pokorney on May 21, 1940, at St. Libory. They farmed near St. Libory until 1941, when they moved to Grand Island. They lived in Ravenna from 1947-? and then returned to Grand Island. Mr. Gerdes was a mechanic, retiring about 12 years ago due to failing health. Mrs. Gerdes died in 1968. He married Ann Straus on Jan. 18, 1972 at Grand Island. They made their home here. He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral parish and the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary. Survivors include his wife, Ann; two stepchildren, Dorothy Jerik of East Grand Forks, Minn. and Dave Straus of Grand Forks, N.D., seven step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.
