Bio

A memorial service for Mary E. Howard, 52, of Flint, will be held on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007, at 3 p.m. at Stewart Family Funeral Home with Rev. Herb Bryant officiating. Private family burial was held in Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Miss Howard passed away on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, at the Hospice of East Texas in Tyler. She was born on Jan. 12, 1955, in McLennan County to Oba and Naomi Howard. Mary graduated from Corrigan-Camden High School in 1973, after which she received her Bachelor of Science at the Texas Woman's University in 1994. She worked at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and also as an Occupational Therapist for the Texas Occupational Therapist Association. She developed the "Teddy Bear Program" at Skyview Prison, where inmates make teddy bears to distribute to needy children. She also worked with Therapet to bring therapeutic animals into prisons for help in healing. Miss Howard was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church and choir. Mary is survived by her loving family, including her foster mother, Evelyn Amerine of Lufkin; foster brother, Jim Amerine and wife, Dianne, of Moscow; aunts, Mary and husband, Travis, Hammer of Waco, and Virginia and husband, James, Potthoff of Grand Prairie; and numerous cousins and friends. Memorials in honor of Mary may be made to the Green Acres Baptist Church Worship Ministry, 1607 Troup Highway, Tyler, 75701; or to a church or charity of your choice.
