THE OKLAHOMAN (Oklahoma City, OK) 9/5/1928 MAN IS SLAIN DURING FIGHT (Wednesday) R.W. Mayes of Erick Auto Firm Shot; Witness Tells of Fight Questioning a number of persons, police Tuesday night were attempting to solve the slaying of R.V. "Dick" Mayes, 35 years old, automobile dealer of Erick, who was shot through the head in the 400 block on East Tenth street, shortly after 9 o'clock Tuesday night. D.L. Roberts, 409 East Tenth street, who went to the scene of the shooting, said there was a fight in progress when he arrived. Mayes was beating a woman on the head with a parasol shortly before the fatal bullet was fired. Roberts told police. Police who investigated the shooting said Mayes was shot from behind, but Walter Benson, justice of the peace, acting as coroner, said it was his belief that Mayes was shot from the front as there were powder burns on the man's face. Another bullet was believed to have gone through the windshield of the car. An exploded shell from a .32 caliber automatic pistol was found in the bottom of the Mayes car. Mrs. Mayes and the slain man's sister-in-law went to the police station immediately following the shooting and were questioned by Night Chief of Police Charles A. Becker. The body is at the Watts & McAtee Undertaking company.
