DOUGLAS P. BOLEN was born March 5, 1950, in Grand Island, Nebraska, the fourth of seven children of Gilbert and M. Jean (Douglas) Bolen. He passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at his home in rural Lyons, Nebraska, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 62 years. Douglas was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Clarks, Nebraska, where he lived with his family until his senior year of high school. He participated in football, basketball, track and baseball. He graduated from Omaha Tech High School in 1968. In 1974, he graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing. On August 16, 1967, Douglas married the love of his life, Janice Betts, at St. Richard’s Catholic Church in Omaha. Together they farmed and raised five daughters. The family raised and rode Arabian horses for many years. Doug worked as a registered nurse throughout his life and was also a farmer, horseman, welder, handyman and most of all husband, father and grandfather. Throughout his life, he lived in Grand Island, Kearney, Big Springs, Rochester, MN, Millard, Scribner, Whiting, IA, Decatur and Lyons. Douglas served in the U. S. Army from October 17, 1969, until he was honorably discharge on August 4, 1971. He served his country with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam and received the Bronze Star Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. He was a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bancroft, Nebraska, American Legion and Knights of Columbus of Lyons. He enjoyed spending time with his family, watching ball games, teaching his grandchildren and in the last six years became an avid golfer. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife; 5 daughters; 19 grandchildren; siblings; father- and mother-in-law; sisters- and brothers-in-law; many nieces, nephews and friends. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: Saturday, December 29, 2012, 2:00 pm at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Lyons, Nebraska with Military Honors. BURIAL: Private Family VISITATION: Friday 5-8 pm with a 7pm Rosary all at St Joseph’s Catholic Church. Saturday visitation will also be held at the church one hour prior to the service.
