Bio

James Franklin Jensen was a son of Lars Rove Jensen and Elizabeth Ann Freestone. He was born 31 March 1872 at Alpine, Utah. When he was seven years of age they moved to Orderville, Utah, and lived in the United Order for five years. His brother Reuben learned the carpenter trade and so did James Franklin when he was old enough. After the United Order broke up they built their mother a three room house. It was so well built that it still stands today. [when history was written.] When his father came home from one of his trips to Salt lake City where he sold the garden truck [term for produce] that they raised on the farm, he brought with him another wife, Agnes Smith, and her five children. This greatly upset Elizabeth as he had not discussed it with her before hand, so when Lars wanted to move to the Provo Bench she would not go with him. The boys were able to earn enough money to take care of their mother and family, so when they wanted to go to Idaho, Elizabeth went with them. James Franklin saved enough money for a Church Mission and on Wednesday, 13 October 1897, he received his endowments, was set apart for his mission and took the train to the Southern States Mission all the same day. Because of the food and other conditions there he became ill and was to be sent home. However, his mother died 27 Novcmber 1898, before he reached home. He had met Laura Estella Whitmill, the daughter of Henry Roland Whitmill and Luna Estella Searle, before he went on his mission. After his return they were married 6 Sep 1899 in the Logan Temple.* Laura was born 22 April 1880 at Salt Lake City, Utah. She was a small pretty woman, who took pride in her appearance, so was always clean and neat. Their first child, a son, was born 22 July 1900 at Basalt, Idaho. He was named James Roland Jensen. He must have been a special child as they were only allowed to have him for a short while. He died 12 December 1900. They were blessed with a baby girl 23 March 1902. She was named Roxie Estella. Roxie after Eliza Roxie Snow. Two more sons were born to them; Melvin Ernest born 12 August 1904 and Mark Franklin, born 20 October 1906. Laura suffered' from asthma and died at the tender age of almost 29 with pneumonia. She died 21 February 1909, leaving her husband with three small children. It was very hard for James Franklin with three small children to take care of and work his farm. He left the children to take care of themselves. He finally had to give up the farm and moved his family to Logan, Utah, where he worked as a carpenter. When Roxie was nine years old they moved back to a farm at Woodville, Idaho, (outside of Shelley). The boys then stayed with their father but Roxie went to live with her Grandmother Whitmill for awhile. She was later adopted by James and Elizabeth Duckworth of Blackfoot. They were well to do and could do so much for her. James FranklIn later married Eva Law 3 April 1916 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They moved to Pocatello, Idaho. They had one son , James Francis later known as J. Frank), born 5 March 1917. The year 1917 was to hold many tragic events for them. About the middle of August their home burned and they lost almost everything. They rented a house while they were rebuilding. On the 11 September 1917, James Franklin had gone out hunting and upon returning home was playing with his children in front of the house. One of the little tots noticed a magpie flying around and asked her father to shoot it. In crawling through a wire fence in order to get a better shot at the bird, the shotgun which he was carrying was in some way discharged and the full load struck him in the chest. Death resulted a few minutes later. The whole family is gone now, Roxie died - 2 May 1963, Melvin - 14 September 1972, Mark - 21 March 1973, Frank - 3 Aug 1963. (This history was received from Norma Montgomery, oldest daughter of Melvin Jensen. It is not known when she wrote it. Norma died 25 March 2000 in Boise, Idaho.
