Bio

See note below about birth year discrepancy: ------------------------------------------------------- Sawyer County Record Jan. 31, 1952 Fred Rang, age 78, passes away Saturday afternoon in Spooner, where he had made his home for the past several months. Mr. Rang was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, on Feb. 8, 1873. At the age of 15, he came to the United States and the County of Monona, in Iowa. he purchased a farm and lived there for 12 years. he later moved to Nebraska, where he farmed for several years. In 1905 he purchased a farm in the town of Lenroot, Sawyer County. In 1907, he was united in marriage to Sophia Stelling in the Phipps Trinity Lutheran Church. They continued to make their home on the farm until illness forced them to discontinue farming, and they moved to Spooner. Mr. Rang served for several years as a member of the school board of the town of Lenroot and for many years as a member of the Town Board. Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Margaret Gerlach of Lincoln, NE; Miss Laura Rang of Chicago and Mrs. Hilda Monson of River Falls, WI; three sons, George of Orchard, NE, Harry and Harold of Hayward. Nine grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were in charge of the Lester Anderson Funeral Home of Hayward, where the remains lay in state until Wednesday noon, when the body was taken to Phipps Trinity Lutheran Church for services at 2 PM, with the Rev. LE Schreiber officiating. Interment was in the family lot in the Phipps Church cemetery. -------------------------------- Fred's birth date and the dates listed in his obituary are not correct. My great-grand mother was his sister, Willamina "Minnie" Mary Elizabeth Rang-Burns. In my research I found that the family came to this country in 1871. I have it that Fred was born about Feb. 8, 1867, in Germany. Their mother married William Laverence about 1872. They had two children; Anna Catherine, born 4 Oct. 1873, and John William, born, 18 Nov. 1876. Then their mother married again to Henry W. C. Hamman 1876. So, as you can see, the obit has Fred being born after he came to this country and way after his mother married twice and had 5 more children.
