Morristown Gazette, Thur., 20 Sept 1917: "JOHN C. MATHES, LONG RESIDENT OF CITY, IS DEAD -------- John C. Mathes, a resident of Morristown for many years, died at his home on West Main street Saturday afternoon after a long illness, aged 67 years. Mr. Mathes was one of the oldest poultry dealers in the city, he having started his business here in the 70's. For some time, however, he was in business in the west, having given up his interest here for that period, but later returned to this city and re-established himself in the egg and poultry trade. He was noted for his charities and many persons who have been the beneficiaries of his kindnesses paid a last tribute to his memory. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Baptist church and were attended by a great concourse of people not only resident of the city but of various sections of the county, Mr. Mathes friendships being confined to no section of East Tennessee. Rev. Spencer Tunnell, pastor of the church, preached the funeral sermon, while Dr. R. N. Price paid an appreciative tribute to the deceased as a man and citizen. Besides his widow, Mrs. Mathes leaves three sons, John F., William D. and Guy F., all of Morristown, and the following brothers and sisters: J. Foster Mathes, of Tacoma, Wash.; Berry Mathes, of Sioux City, Neb.; C. B. Mathes, of Morristown; Mrs. Jennie Smith, of Missouri; Mrs. Maranda Mays and Mrs. Susan Hill, of Morristown." ~~~~~~~~ Son of James H. Mathes and Alta Ivey.
