Bio

From 1915 to 1916, Ferne Brown was a schoolteacher in Clarks, Nebraska. For $50 a month, she taught all grades except seventh. It was here that she met John Dittmer , and they were married in December of 1919. The following spring they moved to a farm near Minden, Iowa where they would spend the next 48 years together, along with their three sons, until John's death in 1967. Ferne remained on the farm, and continued to work on it with the help of her youngest son, well into her later years. She continued to live there until May of 1990 when she became a resident of Baptist Memorial Home in Harlan, Iowa. She died only a few months later at the age of 93. Her oldest son, Lawrence , died in 2006. The youngest lives on the farm and, with the help of relatives, still works on it to this day. Her middle son was my grandfather.
