Bio

L.J. ("Joe") Mikula , 93, passed away on Fathers Day, June 15, 2014 at home with his family in Houston, Texas after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was born on December 9, 1920 in Cameron, Texas to Julia Broz and Anton Mikula. He grew up near Cameron in the Ad Hall Community, attended the Ad Hall School and graduated from C. H. Yoe High School in Cameron. At the outbreak of WWII, he joined the Army Air Corps and was in the 8th Air Force, serving both stateside and in England and France. He returned after the war and earned an Industrial Engineering degree from the University of Houston. He was married in 1950 to Adell Rose Paukert and shortly thereafter began working in sales engineering at Daniel Industries, Inc. where he retired over 38 years later. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of nearly 58 years, his son, Steven Mikula, his brother, Edmund Mikula and his sister, Martha Tomek. He is survived by daughter, Jo Ann Nevitt and husband, Rod; son, David Mikula and wife, Pilar; son, Randy Mikula and wife, Jolee; his daughter-in law, Rachel Mikula; 12 grandchildren, Daniel Paul Mikula, Austin Thompson, Tyler Thompson, Michael Mikula, Matthew Mikula, Robert Franklin, Bryan Thompson, Ryan Mikula, Aiyana Franklin, Will Mikula, Allie Nevitt and Andy Nevitt; sisters, Ottilia ("Tillie") Zarosky and Annie Mae Hubnik of Odessa, Texas, and brother, Anton ("Junior") Mikula, of Hurst, Texas; There will be a visitation on Thursday, June 19, 2014 beginning at 5 p.m. with a Rosary and Vigil for the Deceased at 7 p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 10688 Shadow Wood Drive. Deacon Randy Graham will officiate and will be assisted by Greg Stokes. On Friday, June 20, 2014, there will be a visitation at Marek Burns Laywell Funeral Home, 2800 N. Travis Avenue, Cameron, Texas from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., at which time, family and friends will proceed to Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, 6633 FM 2266, Marak, Texas for the Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Walter Matus will officiate. The Rite of Committal will follow immediately thereafter at the Marak cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church or the Alzheimer's Association.
