Found in The State (Columbia, SC) 20 June 1954: J. Alfred Davis, Sr., 78, of Columbia and Chesterfield, died at 6:45 yesterday evening at his home at 1018 Price Avenue in Columbia. He had been in declining health for three years. Mr. and Mrs. Davis operated a grocery store at 1018 Price Avenue. Mr. Davis was born at Chesterfield on January 1, 1876. He was a member of Zoar Methodist Church at Chesterfield. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mattie McLaurin Davis of Columbia; two sons, Arthur Davis of Chesterfield and James A. Davis of Columbia; seven daughters, Mrs. J. E. Burr, Mrs. D. H. Rollins and Mrs. N. W. Odom of Chesterfield, Mrs. C. E. Lampley of Annapolis, N. C., Mrs. James Bishop and Mrs. J. L. Barefoot of Columbia and Mrs. H. L. Dutton of Newport News, Va.; 18 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. J. S. Rivers of Chesterfield. Funeral services will be held at 5 o'clock this afternoon from Zoar Methodist Church at Chesterfield. Interment will be in the churchyard.
