Graveside services for Lawrence “Shug” Jay, age 88, of Jacksonville, are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 23, 2015 at Resthaven Memorial Park in Jacksonville with Rev. Jerry Carroll officiating. Services are under the direction of Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Mr. Jay passed away Tuesday, January 20, 2015 in Jacksonville. He was born in Jacksonville on February 16, 1926. Shug returned to Jacksonville in 1946 after serving in the Army during WWII. He worked for the United States Postal Service until opening Jay’s Woodworking Shop. The shop was a main stay in Jacksonville even when Shug worked out of town for Skelly Oil Company in Longview and Bealls installing new stores. The woodworking shop also made wood hat blocks for Grady Nutt and Resistol Hat companies. Shug was a long time member of Central Baptist Church in Jacksonville and a member of Good Fellow Sunday School Class as well as a Mason for over 60 years. He was past volunteer of Jacksonville Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alton and Frances Jay; two brothers, and two sisters. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 61 + years, Claxene Jay of Jacksonville; son, Morris Jay and wife Marie of Katy; daughters, Amarylis Fain and husband David of Saginaw, TX, Hilton Jay of Jacksonville, and Allyson Earle and husband Paul of Jacksonville. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Claxton Jay, Brandon Jay, Jennifer Fain, Whitney Jay, Spencer Jay, Ryan Earle, Eric Earle and wife Lena, and Hannah Earle. Honorary pallbearers will be Claxton Jay, Brandon Jay, Ryan Earle, Eric Earle, Spencer Jay, Patrick Hastings, and Ryan Casey. Visitation will begin on Thursday, January 22, 2015 with family receiving friends from 5-7p.m. at Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
